UL Poker Society

History Of The Society

The UL Poker Society as it is known now began in 2006. Founders Michael Coultry and Stephen Carmody started the society up as a way to organize a large, cheap and friendly place to play a Texas Hold 'Em Tournament.

And so taking from the practice that was used on occasion by other clubs and societies as a fund raising event. So in November of 2006 regular games were being held in the UL Sports Arena Bar on Monday Nights for €10.

The Society also helped other Clubs and Societies fund raise as before by offering over half their tournaments as fundraisers for them.

This practise is still in place today but to a different degree. After gaining a solid following in the first year. the Society boisted by new people on its committee ran their first Inter-Varsity tournament.

Though the tournament didn't have as many competitors as would have liked following a last minute pull out from the dublin colleges the tournament itself was considered a success between Limerick and Cork as their best players got to test themselves against each other. Ben Lenihan From UL got the 1st Place battling it out against team mate Con Creedon after securing the Team prize as The supposed B team from UL emerge victorious. This also despite Michael Coultry being the first person out in the Tournament.

That year the Society kept holding fundraisers but had branched into two games on certain weeks. €10 games on Mondays where you can re-buy and €20 games where there are no re-buys. The crowing achievement of the year came after a re-surgance of effort in the second semester saw more people help get the tournaments running ensured the The Poker Society won The Best Society In UL award at the 2008 Clubs And Societies Awards Ball. After only 2 years the Society has the right to call itself the Best Society in UL.

2008/2009 Has started like any other but with the postponement of the Inter-Varsity until February of this year the action has been limited to weekly games where a host of new people showed their skill to claim a seemingly insurmountable lead on our leaderboard.
